In fall the hardwood canopy turns and this place is genuinely one of the best leaf drives within an hour of the Twin Cities. One honest note: because the campsites tuck into trees, you don’t get the wide lake-view sites you’d find at a big reservoir park. You come to Lake Maria for the woods and the trails, not for a sandy swimming beach at your doorstep. If swimming and a beach are the priority for the kids, I’ll often suggest basing closer to Buffalo Lake or one of the Wright County lakes and day-tripping into the park.

Lake Maria is an easy run from the metro. Most folks come out U.S. Highway 12 through Delano, or drop down from Interstate 94 and Highway 25 through Monticello, then cut over to the park on the county roads northwest of Buffalo. From downtown Buffalo it’s only about a 20-minute drive. If you’re flying in, Minneapolis-St. Paul International (MSP) is the closest major airport, with St. Cloud Regional (STC) another option to the northwest — rent the RV from me, fly in light, and I’ll have the rig waiting at your site.
